Nehalem Bay Crabbing

June 2022

Last summer we went crabbing in Nehalem Bay and we had lots of fun. This summer we decided to go again. My Uncle, his friend Kati, my mom, my 2 sisters and went to Jetty Fishery Marina and RV park to go crabbing.

The crabs come out just before high tide. We went to the Jetty Fishery because it is located further upstream so had a higher tide than the place we went last year.

We got our rental boat and the crab traps and we set out to the spot to go crabbing. Once we got there we set the traps in a rough triangle and got to work. What I mean by this is that is we would rotate around the traps going one by one pulling them up checking the crabs to see if if we had keepers. A keeper is a male that is over 5 and 3/4 inches from point to point. Any females or crabs smaller than that had to be thrown back. Then we put back down the trap and move to the next trap.

After about an hour we came in with our 1 crab that was regulation. We ate a late lunch at the marina because they cook whatever you catch plus more crabs, mussels, oysters and corn on the cob.
