Grapevine Grand Prix
May 2022
I left school at 12 o’clock on a Friday, headed to a sailing event in Texas called the Grapevine Grand Prix. After about a 3 hour drive, we arrived at the place where we were staying, and I began preparing my sail for the racing the following day.
We stayed at an RV park that had cabins that you could rent. This place was great because it was only 3 minutes away from the Sailing Club. After unpacking our belongings, we went out to have dinner at a very popular food court and had a good time.
On the first day of racing, I got ready and had plenty of time left before the races. The water was an optimal temperature, because it was about 75 degrees. There was one problem though. There were only about 2 knots of wind and that meant that we were not going to be going fast. Nobody was happy about this, but we still went out to race. I was really happy after the first race because I had gotten 1st place out of 14 boats. After the first day we had done 5 races, and I had been placing at about 4th place in each.
Then the second day rolled around, and the wind was just a tad heavier, with about 3 knots of wind. This was unfortunate, but we rigged up for the day and headed out. That day, though, we only did 4 races. This was because of the fact that the last race was almost an hour with 1 knot of wind. Today I placed 4th on average and I was satisfied with my performance. Then on the way in, I roughly calculated the score in my head and found out that I had placed 4th overall and 3rd in Blue fleet. I was really happy because this was the first time I had gotten top 3 in any out-of-town regatta, and this was only my 3rd time competing out-of-town! This made me ecstatic as we packed up and headed home.
