Fly Fishing the Upper Deschutes River
The Upper Deshutes River runs through Central Oregon, and is a very popular site for fishing and rafting. Earlier in the week we had gone rafting and it was a blast, but today my Uncle and I were going fishing. First we met our guide at the store Hook Fly Shop and he told us that we would be headed to a remote area of the river. Then we hit the road, it was about a 45 minute drive, and a lot of dirt roads. Eventually though, we arrived at the general location that we would be fishing. Once we got on our waders and boots we walked about 15 minutes to the location that we would be fishing. Once we arrived there were fish everywhere in a large pool of flat water with just a bit of current.
Next, we got our rods, and started fishing. I would cast upstream, and had the lures float downstream into the pool allowing all of the fish to see the bait, and decide each time it passed if they wanted to strike. Then after about 5 to 10 minutes my uncle got a catch. It was a nice whitefish, and a great fish to start out the day. In the next hour we caught 6 more whitefish 2 of them being mine and the other 4 my uncles. After this, we moved to a shallower location to do some sight fishing for rainbow trout. My uncle when first and ended up catching a rainbow trout almost immediately.
Then it was my turn, and I did not have the same luck because I did not catch a trout, and the fish left the area. Unfortunately, after this our fishing time was coming to a close, and we decided to go back to the previous location to throw a few more casts catching 2 more fish, 1 per person. Then we packed up and walked back to the cars, and began our car ride back to the rental house that we were staying at.
